Location: southern California, although I’d far rather be in Hobbiton or out hitchhiking the galaxy
Age/Gender: 16/female
How long you have been working on your art: about 2 years
Favorite LotR characters: Merry and Pippin are my absolute favorites, but I also like Aragorn, Gandalf, and, strangely enough, Treebeard.
Preferred art mediums: Graphite is my favorite medium overall: before I do a color drawing, I almost always do a graphite study first; Derwent Graphic pencils have the widest range of darknesses and hardnesses I’ve found so far. However, I also like pastel (Carb-Othello and NuPastel) and colored pencil (Prismacolor), most often used together, with pastel as an underpainting and colored pencil laid over it.
Preferred art subjects: Portraits of people are my favorite subject, especially interesting-looking people. (So for those of you who think I have an obsession with drawing Dominic, well, there’s my explanation.) However, I’ll basically draw anything so long as it catches my eye and piques my curiosity and creativity.
Art Education/Experience: I’m self-taught with trial and error as my teachers––I’ve never taken an art class––but my father is a professional graphic designer and an accomplished artist himself, so he’s always served as a reliable help line; he’s the one who got me hooked on using pastel and colored pencil. I tried taking an art class this year, but I hated it because I have my own style and the teacher wanted me to break out of it. I have done a little freelance work as well, for friends.
Anything else we should know: In my free time, I ride and show American Paint Horses competitively and have multiple World and National Champion titles in my pocket. I design a lot of my own showing outfits, and the green shirt up there is one of my designs; however, I don’t make the actual shirts. I also enjoy writing poetry, doing Photoshop work, and driving other people nuts with my LOTR obsession.
